Understanding the basics of Google AdSense

What is it?

Google AdSense is an advertising placement service by Google. It lets bloggers and webmasters display targeted text, video or image advertisements on website pages and earn revenue when site visitors view or click the ads.
It is a cost-per-click (CPC) advertising platform where you can insert a small amount of HTML text into your sites and have ads appear that are targeted and relevant to the content of the site.

Before using AdSense a key factor is understanding the opportunities you have with AdSense and understanding the traffic you have coming to your site. Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics can provide you with insight to identify who your visitors are and where they are coming from. This works to bring more people to your site and helps optimise your most successful pages to boost overall traffic.

Why use AdSense?

  • It’s free! Everyone loves freebies!
  • Customisation and Control: You decide how the ad should look, feel and appear to fit your website content and you make the decision where the ads should appear. Ensure you only show ads that are relevant to your users with automatic targeting. And the best thing about it is that you get to choose from a variety of sizes and formats.
  • Mobile Interface: It’s mobile optimised, which means you get quick access to your account. Get for when you are on the road. And gives you easy access to check earnings, receive important alerts and view reports.
  • Ads are targeted: Google generates ads based on the content of your website. It scans your website for keywords and determines what ads match your website.
  • Earn revenue: It’s another source to earn money whilst enhancing the user experience of your site.
  • Gain insight: With the powerful integration of Google Analytics and AdSense, it helps you easily identify trends and factors that influence the earning potential of your website.

How does Google choose which advertisements to display?

Google collects information about your search trends and history. It then uses that data to decide which advertisements you are most likely to click on.

If you are an AdSense publisher, Google uses two things to determine which ads to display on your site: keywords and bidding.

Advertisers usually bid different amounts for keywords. So Google chooses the highest bid and puts the advertisement of the highest bidder on your site. Whilst this is happening, Google is also analysing the keywords on each page to determine if the page is relevant to the ad or not.

It doesn’t stop there as Google as takes many other factors into consideration such as the quality of the advertisement and the users own personal data.

So if you are a blogger or a website developer this just may be the perfect tool to bring in revenue!
