How to Migrate Seamlessly from Magento 1 to Magento 2?

How to Migrate Seamlessly from Magento 1 to Magento 2?

Since its release in November 2015, Magento 2 has invited interest not only from the professionals in the e-commerce community but also the dilettantes of the world. Where the announcement that of its previous versions will be retained for the next 2.5 years has allowed the users to plan their migration thoroughly, we all know it’s not an easy time frame. You have a business to run in this competitive world of e-commerce and you can’t afford any setbacks or trailing journeys.

Things to Remember Before Migrating

The migration process requires transferring four components: data, extensions, themes, and customisations. But before you can proceed, you need to remember a few things:

Understand your current e-store on Magento 1

Look for the themes, customisations and any extensions that are installed. Check on their availability on the new platform, and remember to work on their coding. That will enable you to make a successful transition even if they are unable on Magento 2.

Check Your Infra Structure

Magento 2 is completely different from Magento 1.x in terms of technology stack. Advanced technology stacks need more server resources, so check in with your host server if it complies with your current and growing needs.

Script it Down

Remember to shell script your progress with PHP 7, during the process of migration, so that if you need to revisit the steps to repeat or troubleshoot something, you can easily do it. Shell-scripting will also help if an entire team is involved in the process.

Work Hand in Hand

Remember, not to close your current store during the process. You cannot lose your customers. Work hand in hand towards developing your new store on Magento 2. It’s not the actual migration that takes time but it’s the backing up and dumping of your resources and data that takes times.

Duplicate, Sample and Refine

Duplicate your previous Magento database. Since the size of the data serves to be the barometer of the effort and time involved, proceed to sample it and clear the unwanted. It could be the attributes that you no longer use or attributes with third party models. Fill the optional data with a dummy data during the process. And now duplicate it.

Installing the Tool and Choosing the Strategy

Next, you need Magento 2 Data Migration tool and make sure it has access to both your stores on the two platforms. You can now adopt two strategies. You can either let the migration tool work from your current version of Magento (if it’s not updated) and straight to the top. Or you can update your Magento to the latest previous version and then start the migration process.

Proceeding with Data Migration

Stop all the activities of the admin panel of your current store and only allow the orders to be placed. Using the bulk feature of the tool, transfer settings and the rest of the sampled data. The media files, storefront designs, and ACLs can only be transferred manually. To transfer the real time data, now use the dynamic feature of the tool and transport all the real time changes. One important tip is to disable the password rehash during the development as it would save time.

Migration of Extension and Customisations

Third party extensions for Magneto 2.0 can be obtained from online developers if they are available. In case if you have custom modules together with custom codes, then you can utilise Code Migration Toolkit to convert them from Magento 1 to Magento 2.

Migration of Themes

For now you need to make changes to the themes and other unaddressed customisations on Magneto 2.0 and here is when the working on those codes can help you out.
