CMS Content Management Systems

Drupal vs Wordpress - Which is Better?

So far this month, we have discussed 2 Content Management Systems (CMS) – Drupal and Wordpress. Alongside that, we have also run through some of the features of each. However, it’s not always easy to discern which of the two options is the best for you.

Firstly, it’s important to identify that your choice will depend entirely on your needs. While Drupal may be better choice for a particular scenario, Wordpress may be the better choice for another.

Wordpress is unarguably the most popular CMS choice. This is because you can install and use the system easily with minimal knowledge of the technicalities. It’s also free and customizable with thousands of downloadable plugins and features if you decide the existing ones are not enough.

However, the disadvantages of Wordpress have been reported to be that if the site is too big, it can put extra pressure on server resources. Additionally, changing the framework of Wordpress at the backend can sometimes prove to be a challenging feat. Although this is mainly a concern for extremely busy websites with hundreds of thousands of users, it is still good to know.

Following as the second most popular CMS, Drupal is completely open-sourced. If you want an extremely powerful website, then Drupal is the correct choice for you. Also free and customizable, Drupal is slightly more technically advanced and may therefore be more suited to those with at least some technical knowledge of HTML, PHP and web development in general.

With this complexity of use, however, also comes the disadvantage that if something were to go wrong with Drupal, you would not be able to fix it yourself. You know what they say – with great power comes great responsibility!

Wordpress: This is the ideal choice for those just starting out with a small website or blog, or those who don’t have any technical knowledge.

Drupal: Setting up a site that you know is going to grow exponentially means Drupal is the system for you.

Really, the choice all boils down to technical difficulty. However, if you’re going to employ a web design agency such as FDC Studio, then we can help you with all your Drupal management.
