CMS Content Management Systems

Drupal 8!

Most of you must be aware of the free open-source content management platform Drupal? Well if not, then take a look at Introduction to Drupal Month to familiarise yourself with the basics first.

If you already are familiar with Drupal 6 or 7 then this is just for you! It has been a long time waiting, since Drupal’s last update Drupal 7 was in 2011! Here we are, 4 years on and we have some news!

Drupal 8 is here, and it Is the latest, greatest release of one of the world’s most widely used enterprise web CMS. The new version comes with over 200 new features and improvements. That’s right, over 200! This will ensure maximum customization opportunities whilst building websites.

As you know, Drupal is a content management system (CMS), making it easier to create, manage and publish your digital content to all devices, at any time.

In this blog, I will discuss the most popular new features to help you understand what Drupal 8 can offer your website. Follow up soon, for a more detailed blog about these features!

From beautiful new content authoring experience to enhancements for developers, Drupal 8 now has something for everyone to love:

  • Take your website around the world! Enhanced tool for multilingual sites and experiences.
  • Fun and fast content authoring experience, with mobile-first user interface.
  • Goodbye XHTML and say hello to HTML5!!
  • Flexibility in theme customisation via its backend interface!
  • WYSIWYG is now available in Drupal 8 core.
  • 200+ features to choose from to deliver the best possible digital experience for your customers.

Here’s who can benefit and how!

Developers and designers:

Drupal 8 has adopted much of the Symfony stack. Symfony is a PHP (personal home page) web application framework for MVC (model-view-controller) applications. This means that large parts of Symfony are in the codebase, and themes now use Twig templating language.

Site builders:

Drupal 8 is significantly more capable than Drupal 7. So now the new version includes many more popular modules that were only available as add-on modules in the last version. Views module, alongside, Date, E-mail, Link and Telephone Number are all part of Drupal 8 core!

Drupal 8 now has front end editing. What this means is that you can click on almost any part of the site and edit it, without leaving the page!

It might still seem a little complicated and gibberish, and I don’t blame you! But as you read more blogs this month, you will begin to understand and grasp more about Drupal 8! Eventually it will all fall into place.

In the meantime, if your site is currently on Drupal 7 and still not updated, and you’re not sure how to make the Drupal 8 transition, feel free to contact FDC Studio and we can help you!
